THINKING LIKE JESUS AND SOCRATES

Lesson Six:     Working with the Point of Tension

(Or how to blister a brain)

1.         As Christians, we must see the importance of having real communication with people.

2.         There is often a language barrier between Christians and other people.

--We must take time to listen and learn the language of others

--Words such as God, guilt, and sin mean different things to people

--Christians are often not heard because they use an isolated language

3.         Every person you meet is valued as one made in God’s image.

4.         There are two humanites

--Those who are in rebellion to God----Those who have been redeemed by Jesus

--We share an universal image of God with each other

--We stand in one of two humanities, we are particular

 5.         Everyone has a set of presuppositions

--a presupposition is uncritical thoughts we accept about our world

--there are logical conclusions to our presuppositions

--if you have the wrong set of presuppositions you cannot live them out to their logical conclusions

--we need to learn to help people see the logical conclusions of their presuppositions

--The non-Christian must be challenged to see the real world

 6.         You must, with the help of the Holy Spirit, find the place where the tension exists between their presuppositions and the real world.

7.         You must first find places where you can talk and agree.

8.         From this place you can begin to ask questions.

9.         Use questions to bring someone to the logical conclusions of what they believe.

10.       You cannot be cruel or unloving, speak the truth in love if you want to see spiritual results.

11.       Be careful to keep this from being a game.

12.       Be ready to give God’s answer to their need.

13.       Each person has a roof protecting the inconsistency of their beliefs.  Find this roof and try to remove it.
